Family Photography Session in Homestead Florida
I recently had the privilege to photograph a wonderful family at Homestead Bayfront National Park. We arrived very early to benefit from the beautiful light. It was cold but all the wonderful smiles warmed up the place. Great people to work with very willing to pose and give their best to the shoot. Here are a couple of shots from the many that we took that morning. Afterwards my assistant [my daughter] and myself were treated to a delicious meal at Cracker Barrel were we spent a great time of just chewing the fat. Not that the food was full of fat it just a saying.

One Full Glass: Mason Jar Photography
After reading Jonas Peterson’s Mason Jar Manifesto I got inspired to shoot some of the objects that surround me. Even though he is dealing with pulling back the layers of what Weddings and Wedding Photography should be it still touched something in me. Ironically the first thing that I pointed the lens of may camera was to a mason jar.
These jars have been kind of adopted into my family. While before we always seem to have a fight trying to keep full sets of those glasses that you buy in boxes, these are multiplying. Their soft, warm feel in ones hand and lips feel comfortable and natural. Their original design might have not been as objects of beauty or elegance but to us they are part of the family.
There is no demand from them to be cared for, no delicacy that we must be aware of. They are like stray dogs thankful that they have had a second chance and thankful that some one simply cares. They are not just simply objects in a “different” type of wedding where the decor tries to send a message of down to earth people. Where the groom must wear converse sneakers to look cool, no these are the real thing objects that were on their way to the trash without any further use. They where not created to be simply a display item, a “detail” in a wedding no on the contrary they are real working objects like working dogs not to be pampered but to be used and abused. They are simply thankful mutts.
A Wedding in Black & White and a few thoughts.
I started some 30 years ago in working on images in black and white. I was taught the process of developing in a small kitchen of a college dorm. It was in England and I became captivated by the process especially seeing the image come to life on the paper once it was placed in the developing tank. The smells and the total process of the darkroom was amazing to me. But that was years ago and now digital is here and it is not going anywhere.
It becomes easy just to click and whamm the image is there. A bit of Photoshop and we have an image in what ever filter color we could want. We could try to keep the nostalgia and the romance of the process but after all is said and done the final image is what counts, sure there are differences.
Yes the darkroom process is great but getting the image is better, I don’t believe that we have to do zen photography where we meditate on the process. Its about getting the image, getting the moment, getting the memory.
I wanted to show a full wedding and felt that going black and white on every image would help to keep the continuity. I will be posting the best from Becky’s wedding. We had a blast at this wedding specially during the formal group pictures where I was almost hanged from the ladder that I was using.

Viewing the World Sideways…..
From our travels in Mexico
As we walked the small corridors between the vendors in this outdoor market I got a glimpse of this beautiful set of eyes staring at me. Quicker than you can say “howdy” the shutter button was pressed. I love this type of image where only fast instinctive reflexes will get you the photograph. Only after I really contemplated the image on my laptop did I truly appreciated what I captured. It is one of my favorites from the many trips to Mexico that we made.
This is the typical way they carry babies in Chiapas, Mexico. You will only find a hand full of baby strollers, it’s all constant contact with the mother or other female family member. It is the indigenous way of childcare.
